Reynard

Penny had never seen a fox in real life before. She had seen pictures and photographs of them in books, of course, but she had never seen them living in the wild, and never had she seen one this close up. Its rather beady, tawny eyes were looking straight at her. She looked above it and on either side and saw nothing but the azalea bushes and trunks of the pine trees. The wind blew lightly and tousled the greyish-white fur on the fox’s neck and chest. Penny scooted, and noisily and vigorously moved to stand up, all the while keeping her gaze on the seated fox.

The fox didn’t budge, except to raise its head as Penny rose to her feet, keeping its eyes on her face.

“Yes,” said the fox with boredom in its voice. “I am the one talking.
